ThinkTank Waterless Toilet: Use & Maintenance
1. Trap Door Usage
Keep the trap door closed when only urinating.
2. Container Capacity
The waste container holds approximately 40-60 solid wastes, depending on toilet paper usage. Less frequent use allows waste to dry and shrink. To increase capacity, store urine-soaked paper in a separate bag.
3. Fan Operation
The fan should run 24/7 for optimal performance. If leaving for an extended period, disconnect the fan and either empty the toilet or tightly secure the lid on the waste container.
4. Fan Maintenance
To maintain proper airflow, clean the fan monthly with a vacuum cleaner. The fan is designed for easy access and cleaning, which helps avoid the need for a dust screen. Dust screens reduce airflow efficiency.
5. Insect Screens
Two insect screens are provided – one for the intake and one for the exhaust. Install the intake screen at the end of the intake pipe. The exhaust screen is optional, especially if the exhaust vents through the roof or in areas with few insects. Clean insect screens monthly during warmer months.
6. Cleaning the Bowl
The solid waste opening in the ThinkTank is larger than most waterless toilets, with vertical walls to prevent waste from contacting the sides. Clean the bowl less frequently, and when needed, spray a little water on the chute and wipe with a paper towel (which can be discarded into the toilet).
7. Cleaning Products
Use non-abrasive liquid cleaners only, treating the toilet like an acrylic bathtub. Avoid abrasive cleaners, including cream cleaners.
Waste Disposal Procedure
1. Disposal Regulations
If you're unsure of local regulations regarding waste disposal, contact the local authorities. It's your responsibility to ensure waste is composted or disposed of safely.
2. Adding Compost Material
Once the container is full, optionally add wood pellets, cat litter, or other compostable material to cover the waste.
3. Closing the Trap Door
Always ensure the trap door is CLOSED.
4. Opening the Toilet Lid
Carefully open the upper body of the toilet and secure it with the latch pin.
5. Engaging the Trap Door Arm
Push the trap door arm back until it engages with the magnet at the rear of the toilet.
6. Bagging the Waste
Optionally tie a knot on the compostable bag for extra security.
7. Removing the Waste Container
Place the lid on the container and remove the entire waste container. Be cautious, as the full container can weigh up to 25 lbs. If lifting 25 lbs is difficult, empty the container before it's completely full.
8. Composting the Waste
Carry the waste container to your compost bin, remove the lid, and turn the container upside down to dump the waste and the compostable bag. Avoid pulling the bag out of the container, as it may break and spill.
9. Cover the Waste
Thoroughly cover the waste with dry grass, leaves, soil, or other compostable material.
10. Replacing the Bag
Place a new compostable bag in the container, optionally securing it with an elastic band around the rim.
11. Reinstall the Container
Place the empty container back in the toilet. If the previous bag broke, rinse out and dry the container first.
12. Closing the Trap Door Arm
Close the trap door arm over the waste container to ensure it’s secure.
13. Final Check
Double-check that the trap door is closed before releasing the latch pin and closing the seat.
